Day Eight - Damage Limitation

My combined total from all the sleep during this experiment is little over 16h. If I'd were done it perfectly I would be at 14 hours after 7 days. So that's how much oversleeps have affected it (and missed naps compensated). Seventh day though consisted solely on 20 minute naps.

Day 8.1

Non-troublefree nap once again. I had some weird stuff going on after waking up. I played around with my alarm without clear reason. Another REM-related thing I've forgotten? I laid a moment on the sofa, luckily didn't fall asleep or something worse. I was so disconnected with everything for a moment that I needed to check what had just happened on the basis of how much time had gone after last nap. It was only 10 minutes to my relief. I also had changed my alarm to 8:10 for some reason. I was really messed up for a moment then.

I'm not as hardcore in tiredness as I've been at worst, but I'm just badly enough tired so that it definitely kills my productivity. I've been struggling with huge procrastination when writing and I won't even bother playing poker when I'm so long way off my normal brain performance.

Basically it seems it's going to be another day of just waiting for sleep depravation symptoms to subside. I might have some better moments where I could get something done, but it doesn't look that good. I am happy though that the next nap is already tenth in row successfully. That's only couple of naps away from my former record. Those couple of naps might be hard though. My sis will go to school today so she won't be around to keep me up during noon. On the otherhand, day time naps haven't still caused any superhard trouble for me. I'll just stack up on alarms and I should be fine, just fine.

I've done some some photoshopping for fun so in a sense I've been productive.

Damn! Another oversleep. I don't know what happened on this one, I really have zero recall. My compurer's alarm is set to next phase already and my phone's alarm seems to have come off as well. So it must've been your traditional sleeping through the alarm.

This is getting very frushtrating. Now what happens? 2-3 phases where I regain some functionality and then pretty much rest of the time zombie mode.

I'm not as upset as last time this happened but still, it always puts you down when you fight through the night only to find yourself waking up almost two hours too late.

I guess I need new alarms and some way to get myself not disabling computer's alarm everytime I get up to shut down my phone's alarm. I tried taking the mouse off once. Then again, I should probably start putting computer's alarm going off first for tough naps. Though I wasn't expecting this one to be tough, so it might've not helped at all.

The other person is the only 100 % alarm of course, I wish my sis were awake but that wasn't unfortunately the case. But at least I ought to make it through noon naps easier. Though I'm not falling into that trap that mantaining schedule would be easy for a couple of phases now. Last thing I need is another oversleep.

Words fail me. I'm having so much trouble in so many fronts again. And to think that there hasn't been anything really intense yet. Now I need to figure out some alternative alarms.

Worst thing about the oversleep is that it always begs for more. You don't get refreshed enough and now that you got really to the taste of sleep you'll want whole lotta more it. So I should make it through next 90 minutes just fighting in zombie mode.

If I force myself to find anything positive about it, it was refreshing to actually recall a dream once in a while. Or I didn't recall any plot or anything, just some scenes and situations, but it's still more than what I've gotten so far.

3h 40 minutes is a surprisinly long time. Really long time if all you do is wait for next nap, sleep deprived. I guess I'll go for a walk. I've sat around long enough.

A little longer nap, because I didn't wake up for some reason for my normal alarm. However the computer alarm for once did it's job. There was some initial groggyness, but it has gone away. Now I'm experiencing the "oversleep-high" and feeling alert and pretty good... Or then again, maybe not. My state is shifting around really much. I guess I have to wait for next phase before I start feeling really better.

I went out for a 20 minutes and sat there for a moment. I guess I fell asleep. My sis came shouting and apparently I had not reacted to first shout. However that's not really a notable error since it's impossible that I slept more than a couple of minutes, if even that.

Good nap even if I'm still fucked. Since I figured out tha only (fun) thing to do while in sleep-deprived enough is gaming I've been installing bunch of games to my computer. They should help to fight the the pain of nothing having much to do. But yeah, I'm still constantly feeling like I'm going to fall asleep just now. It seems like I'm not getting any improvement to my performance after all, or if it comes it will come at night.

Alright, this comes to strech a bit the term "successful nap". It certainly wasn't a success in terms of keeping inside the schedule, with me probably falling asleep couple of minutes early and getting up almost quarter of a hour too late. That said it isn't failure either. 40 minutes is a long time, but as far as I know it shouldn't mess up everything. So what happened? I shut down the alarm while sleeping. My sis told me to get up and I had reacted by opening my eyes everytime she said something. So finally at 18:25 I regained conchiousness and was very confused of what had happened. She apparently thought I were awake.

I made a deal with her that I'll get off the bed everytime I wake up so that there isn't future mess-ups on this frontier. Nap itself was refreshing - it has been really hard to battle all day, but this seems like a welcome break from it. Whether it is down to nap being longer or just a late reaction to the earlier oversleep, I don't know.

I'm actually really torn whether this is a successful nap or not. I counted 45-minute nap on day six as an oversleep. This is max. 40 mins, can be a bit shorter, I'm not perfectly sure about waking up or falling asleep times. Also I don't know what to think about the fact that I was reacting to her asleep. Meh. I don't know, I'll change it to unsuccesful. Limit is 30 minutes from now on, otherwise it is an oversleep, albeit a small one. It wouldn't matter if I had 20+ successful naps in a row under my belt, but now that I've been messing up constantly this minor thing just has that much of a bigger impact.

So presuming my last nap goes without problems this might seem like another catastrophic day with two oversleeps. I'm obviously not happy, but I think I did decent damage-limitation considering I was tired the whole day. I really need to step it up though. Tomorrow will need to be clean sweep. I think I have good chance of making through weekend without oversleeps. That would be three succesful days in a row.. Well, I can fantasize about it.

I went bit early to sleep, expecting some trouble falling asleep because I was feeling so fresh. I fell asleep bit faster than I expected and enjoyably woke up 10 minutes before alarm while still getting enough sleep.

I guess that's all. There's still the 3½ hours of this phase to "weather out", but I doubt there will be any trouble. So I'll just wrap this day up. Let's hope tomorrow is start of something special.
